Description

Substance P, an 11-amino acid peptide, is part of the tachykinin peptide hormone family that includes neurokinin A, as well as the related peptides, neuropeptide K and neuropeptide gamma (1,2). These hormones are thought to function as neurotransmitters which interact with nerve receptors and smooth muscle cells (1). Substance P is normally present at relatively high concentrations in nerve endings in selected regions of the mammalian brain. It is present in dorsal root ganglion (primary sensory) neurons and has been functionally linked to pain. The specific receptor subtype that corresponds to substance P is neurokinin 1 receptors, and this neurotransmitter appears to play a key role in the regulation of emotions (3).
